Content Management for Exhibits
Stories change, photos age, and new information becomes available. Anyone managing an interactive exhibit for a museum, visitor center, or tourist information office will, sooner or later, face the exact same question: how do we update our content without constantly relying on an external agency? With a custom CMS, your team can take control themselves, without technical knowledge and without waiting times.
Manage Content Yourself, with Zero Waiting Time
Content management sounds technical, but it is actually highly practical: your team can update text, videos, photos, and audio files without ever seeing a single line of code. Adding a new video, refining a description, or changing a system setting is done right when you need it—without waiting for a developer and without getting an extra invoice for a minor change. This exact difference determines whether an exhibit stays current or starts to feel outdated over time.
Why This Determines the Lifespan of an Exhibit
An exhibit that cannot evolve slowly loses its value. Visitors notice outdated content immediately, even if the physical installation itself still works perfectly. By putting content management system control in the hands of your own team, an exhibit remains relevant for years after its opening. This holds true for a museum with a permanent exhibition just as much as for a visitor center or tourist office with an ever-changing story. This way, your investment in the installation yields returns over a much longer period.
What Our Custom System Brings to the Table
Beyond updating text and imagery, our system supports features engineered specifically for interactive installations. It automatically generates QR codes for the exhibit, allowing visitors to continue reading at home or dive deeper into topics during their visit. Content is retrieved once a day and stored locally on the hardware, ensuring the exhibit keeps running smoothly even if the internet connection drops out. Visitors won’t notice a thing. Multiple languages can also be supported, which is highly valuable for venues catering to both local and international visitors.
In Practice: VVV Almere
For Almere City Marketing, we built two interactive exhibits: ‘City in the Spotlight’ and the ‘Flevo Timeline’. Both were designed around one core requirement: the team at VVV Almere had to be able to manage the content themselves. For ‘City in the Spotlight’, the team adds new videos, playlists, and locations, while adjusting the color, shape, and position of the physical spotlight on the architectural model. For the ‘Flevo Timeline’, new historical milestones are added, complete with photos, video, and spoken audio delivered via an interactive audio puck.
Built to Grow with You
A standard CMS is typically not equipped to handle the specific requirements of an interactive exhibition, such as controlling a spotlight or synchronizing multiple screens. That is why our system is built directly around the underlying technology of the installation itself. Furthermore, multiple exhibits can connect to the very same system, now and in the future, preventing your team from having to juggle separate, fragmented platforms.
